Learning About World Religions: Islam!

Learning about world religions is a noble pursuit, and here, we’ll explain how to go about it the right way so you don’t get lost in misinformation.

Islam is the second largest religion in the world and the number of Muslims increases as time goes by. And today we will learn about it.

Allah says in the holy Quran:

Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “We believe in Allah and what has been revealed to us and what was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and his descendants; and what was given to Moses, Jesus, and other prophets from their Lord—we make no distinction between any of them, and to Him, we ˹fully˺ submit.” [3:84]

Now let’s learn more about what Islam says about other religions, and answer all the questions you have.

The Ibrahimic religions in Islam

The quran in Masjid to show how to learn about world religions and start with Islam

Muslims respect all religions and it’s important to understand what Islam says about other religions. One important religion to learn about from the perspective of Islam is the Ibrahimic religion.

Over the years misconceptions spread about it.

The prophet Abraham (peace and blessing be upon him) is the prophet to who the Ibrahimic religion was revealed. The religion calls for worshipping only one go and he is Allah, as in all religions.

All religions call to the same beliefs which are worshipping Allah, believing in all the prophets, the day of judgment and resurrection, and all humans equal. Those beliefs will make life better and give us a better future.

The best way to learn about the Ibrahimic religion is through the holy Quran.

Allah says in the Quran:

Then We revealed to you ˹O Prophet, saying˺: “Follow the faith of Abraham, the upright, who was not one of the polytheists.” [16:123]

Allah says in the Holy Quran:

“Indeed, the believers, Jews, Sabians1 and Christians—whoever ˹truly˺ believes in Allah and the Last Day and does good, there will be no fear for them, nor will they grieve.” [5:69]

Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “O People of the Book! Let us come to common terms: that we will worship none but Allah, associate none with Him, nor take one another as lords instead of Allah.” But if they turn away, then say, “Bear witness that we have submitted ˹to Allah alone˺.” [3:64]

Muslims believe in all the prophets and respect them all.

Allah says in the holy Quran:

“The Messenger ˹firmly˺ believes in what has been revealed to him from his Lord, and so do the believers. They ˹all˺ believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, and His messengers. ˹They proclaim,˺ “We make no distinction between any of His messengers.” And they say, “We hear and obey. ˹We seek˺ Your forgiveness, our Lord! And to You ˹alone˺ is the final return.” (2:285).

All the divine books call for worshipping only one God, Allah.

Further, the Holy Qur’an says:

“Then in the footsteps of the prophets, we sent Jesus, son of Mary, confirming the Torah revealed before him. And We gave him the Gospel containing guidance and light and confirming what was revealed in the Torah—a guide and a lesson to the God-fearing.” [5:46]

The Gospel, Torah, and Quran all are revealed to guide humans to the right path.

“We have revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ this Book with the truth, as a confirmation of previous Scriptures and a supreme authority on them. So, judge between them by what Allah has revealed, and do not follow their desires over the truth that has come to you. To each of you, We have ordained a code of law and a way of life. If Allah had willed, He would have made you one community, but His Will is to test you with what He has given ˹each of˺ you. So, compete with one another in doing good. To Allah you will all return, then He will inform you ˹of the truth˺ regarding your differences.” [5:48]

Where to learn about the Ibrahimic religions?

The Quran is the best resource to learn about the religions.

In it, we learn about the stories of the prophets and how they overcome the challenges they faced.

Here are some verses from the holy Quran about the prophet Ibrahim (peace and blessing be upon him).

And mention in the Book ˹O Prophet, the story of˺ Abraham. He was surely a man of truth and a prophet.

˹Remember˺ when he said to his father, “O dear father! Why do you worship what can neither hear nor see nor benefit you at all?

O  dear father! I have certainly received some knowledge which you have not received, so follow me and I will guide you to the Straight Path.

O  dear father! Do not worship Satan. Surely Satan is ever rebellious against the Most Compassionate.

O  dear father! I truly fear that you will be touched by a torment from the Most Compassionate, and become Satan’s companion ˹in Hell˺.”

He threatened, “How dare you reject my idols, O  Abraham! If you do not desist, I will certainly stone you ˹to death˺. So be gone from me for a long time!”

Abraham responded

, “Peace be upon you! I will pray to my Lord for your forgiveness. He has truly been Most Gracious to me.

As I distance myself from ˹all of˺ you and from whatever you invoke besides Allah, I will ˹continue to˺ call upon my Lord ˹alone˺, trusting that I will never be disappointed in invoking my Lord.”

So after he had left them and what they worshipped besides Allah, We granted him Isaac and Jacob, and made each of them a prophet.

We showered them with Our mercy, and blessed them with honourable mention.” [Surah Maryam]

Then after the fear had left Abraham, and the good news had reached him, he began to plead with Us for the people of Lot.

Truly, Abraham was forbearing, tender-hearted, and ever turning ˹to his Lord˺.

˹The angels said,˺ “O Abraham! Plead no more! Your Lord’s decree has already come, and they will certainly be afflicted with a punishment that cannot be averted!” [Surah Hud]

What Islam says about the other religions

The holy Quran and the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) call to respect and believe in all the prophets. The prophet said:

“Beware!  Whoever is cruel and hard on a non-Muslim minority, or curtails their rights, or burdens them with more than they can bear, or takes anything from them against their free will; I (Prophet Muhammad) will complain against the person on the Day of Judgment.” (Abu Dawud)

Allah said in the holy Quran:

Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “We believe in Allah and what has been revealed to us and what was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and his descendants; and what was given to Moses, Jesus, and other prophets from their Lord—we make no distinction between any of them, and to Him, we ˹fully˺ submit.” [3:84]

Belief in all prophets

We can see clearly in the above verse that Allah orders us in the holy Quran to believe in all the prophets and respect them. And no one should be forced to convert to any religion, everyone is free to choose the religion he/she believes in. there’s no forcing one’s beliefs and opinions on others. And we can see that in the following verse:

“Let there be no compulsion in religion, for the truth stands out clearly from falsehood.1 So whoever renounces false gods and believes in Allah has certainly grasped the firmest, unfailing hand-hold. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.” [2:256]

We can learn that from the life of the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him). When he migrated to Madinah he didn’t force anyone to convert to Islam or treated them with disrespect.

On the contrary, Muslims lived together with the people of the book in their houses, and helped one another as equals. Didn’t try to force their beliefs on them.

What the Quran and Sunnah teach us

That’s the teaching of the Quran and Sunnah. Allah created us into nations to worship him and to communicate and treat each other with kindness. Allah said in the holy Quran:

“O humanity! Indeed, We created you from a male and a female and made you into peoples and tribes so that you may ˹get to˺ know one another. Surely the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous among you. Allah is truly All-Knowing, All-Aware.” [49:13]

In Islam there’s no racism, prejudice or intolerance, it’s a religion of kindness, peace, and love. Muslims respect other religions and treat the believers of other religions with kindness.

Allah says in the holy Quran:

Do not argue with the People of the Book unless gracefully, except with those of them who act wrongfully. And say, “We believe in what has been revealed to us and what was revealed to you. Our God and your God is ˹only˺ One. And to Him, we ˹fully˺ submit.” [29:46]

Did you know that the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) used to visit the sick people of all religions? And even showed respect at their Funerals. One day a funeral of a Jew passed before the prophet so he stood up to show respect. When he was asked “Why did you stand up for a Jewish funeral?” his answer was “Is it not a human soul?” (Al-Bukhari)

Other religions in Quran.

No one should be forced to follow a religion he doesn’t believe in, and we can see that clearly in the holy Quran:

“Let there be no compulsion in religion, for the truth stands out clearly from falsehood.1 So whoever renounces false gods and believes in Allah has certainly grasped the firmest, unfailing hand-hold. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.” (2:256)

Had your Lord so willed ˹O Prophet˺, all ˹people˺ on earth would have certainly believed, every single one of them! Would you then force people to become believers? [10:99]

English

“We have revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ this Book with the truth, as a confirmation of previous Scriptures and a supreme authority on them. So judge between them by what Allah has revealed, and do not follow their desires over the truth that has come to you.

To each of you, We have ordained a code of law and a way of life. If Allah had willed, He would have made you one community, but His Will is to test you with what He has given ˹each of˺ you. So compete with one another in doing good. To Allah you will all return, then He will inform you ˹of the truth˺ regarding your differences.” [5:48]

Allah is the one who sees what we do in our lives and he is the one who will judge us. No one has the right to judge another person or treat him with no respect.

“Allah will judge between you ˹all˺ on Judgment Day regarding your differences.” [22:69]

We’re all responsible

We all are responsible for what we do and based on our deeds we will be judged on the day of judgment.

“Because of that, you ˹O Prophet˺ will invite ˹all˺. Be steadfast as you are commanded, and do not follow their desires. And say, “I believe in every Scripture Allah has revealed. And I am commanded to judge fairly among you. Allah is our Lord and your Lord. We will be accountable for our deeds and you for yours. There is no ˹need for˺ contention between us. Allah will gather us together ˹for judgment˺. And to Him is the final return.” [42:15]

Muslims are forbidden from harming people of other religions

Abusing people from other religions is forbidden in Islam. Even if they hurt Muslims and treat them with abuse Muslims are not allowed to abuse them. As Allah says in the holy Quran:

“And do not insult those they invoke other than Allāh, lest they insult Allāh in enmity without knowledge. Thus We have made pleasing to every community their deeds. Then to their Lord is their return, and He will inform them about what they used to do.” [16:125]

We’re told to uphold justice

The Quran teaches us to always uphold justice even if it will be against us.

“O believers! Stand firm for justice as witnesses for Allah even if it is against yourselves, your parents, or close relatives. Be they rich or poor, Allah is best to ensure their interests. So do not let your desires cause you to deviate ˹from justice˺. If you distort the testimony or refuse to give it, then ˹know that˺ Allah is certainly All-Aware of what you do.” (4:135)

Always bear the truth.

“O believers! Stand firm for Allah and bear true testimony. Do not let the hatred of a people lead you to injustice. Be just! That is closer to righteousness. And be mindful of Allah. Surely Allah is All-Aware of what you do.”

Islam teaches us to be kind even to the ones who hurt us perhaps one day they will be kind to us.

“Good and evil cannot be equal. Respond ˹to evil˺ with what is best, then the one you are in a feud with will be like a close friend.” [41:34]

Muslims with a non-Muslim family

Even a Muslim who has a non-Muslim parent is ordered to treat them with respect and be nice to them.

“But if they pressure you to associate with Me what you have no knowledge of,1 do not obey them. Still keep their company in this world courteously, and follow the way of those who turn to Me ˹in devotion˺. Then to Me you will ˹all˺ return, and then I will inform you of what you used to do.” (31:15)

Allah says in the holy Quran:

“Had your Lord so willed ˹O Prophet˺, all ˹people˺ on earth would have certainly believed, every single one of them! Would you then force people to become believers?” (10:99)

Why Islam says that all religions are part of Islam?

All religions call to worship one God, and he is Allah, believe in his prophets and that all humans are equal. That’s the message of All prophets’s to guide humans to the right path.

The word Islam means “submission to the Will of the One True God” and that is the message of all religions. To worship only one God, Allah.
