Islam is the second largest religion in the world yet many people and western media spread misconceptions about it. Therefore, it’s important to learn the truth about it and its history.

Why is it important to learn about Islam? it’s important to learn about Islam to learn its truth, not the misconceptions spread by western media. Islam is a religion that calls for peace and being kind to one another, helping the ones in need, and always being nice even to the ones who hurt you. Just like we learn from the life of our beloved prophet (peace and blessing be upon him).

Now let’s understand the importance of learning about Islam, the best resources to learn from, the first thing to learn, and much more. Let’s get started.

Why is it important to learn about Islam as a Muslim?

Islam in a book to show why is it important to learn about islam

Learning about Islam as a Muslim is essential. We can’t be Muslims without knowing the history and teachings of Islam. As Muslims, we are the ones responsible to help people understand the truth about Islam and eliminate any misconceptions. But how will we do that without firm knowledge?

When talking to someone about Islam we should listen to their concerns and correct any wrong information they have. However, many people tend to get angry and offend the speaker as a way of defending Islam and that only makes it worse. And that might be caused by the lack of information the person has about Islam.

Islam Shapes us, not just religion

Islam shapes our personality, it’s not just a religion, it shapes our personalities and way of thinking. As Muslims, we should be kind and nice to others and that is what we learn from the history of Islam.

We learn from the life of our beloved prophet to be kind to others. The prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) was always kind to his neighbors even to the ones who have hurt him. From him, we learn that we should always be kind to others and build good relationships with them.

We also learn from him to give charity and help the ones in need: “Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity.” [Al-Tirmidhi]

The prophet has always taken care of the people in need; he kept giving charity to poor people and the ones in need. Whether food, money, clothes or whatever they need. And he instructed us to do the same, as Muslims we should give charity regularly.

We learn to listen to one another and involve other people in decision-making. The prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) always took the opinion of his followers in policymaking and leading the ummah. He never forced his opinion on others. During the Battle of the Trench, he actively took advice from his followers. He took Hazrat Salman Farsi’s advice of digging a strategic trench to gain an advantage over the enemy.

Because he listened to them they made a great strategy that resulted in making Muslims win the battle of the trench. From this we learn that we should ask people for their advice and listen to them, this will not make us less than them or anything. On the contrary, it will help us come up with a better decision.

Those are just little things to learn, and yet there’s more to learn. Islam made breakthrough discoveries that led to what we have now, especially during the golden age of Islam.

Breakthrough discoveries

During the Islamic golden age, Arabic culture, and Islam spread to North Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, and Southern Europe.

There was thriving in all fields, medicine, art, commerce, engineering, education, and science. During the golden age of Islam, the Islamic empire was the center of trading goods, knowledge, and everything.

During the golden age of Islam, there was great innovation in the medical field. Most of the tools that are used now in surgeries were invented in that era. Tools like forceps, scalpels, and catgut for stitching wounds. They were invented by a famous surgent called al-Zahrawi. That’s not the only thing he did. He also wrote a manual on medical practices of 1500 pages.

The Abbasid Caliphs Harun al-Rashid and his son al-Ma’mun also encouraged the translation movement of Greek works into Arabic. They wanted to build a library of knowledge. Where all the knowledge needed can be found in all kinds of fields. Therefore, the scholars translated philosophy, science, and medical texts. The Abbasid Caliphs Harun al-Rashid and his son al-Ma’mun wanted to excel in the field of medicine by accessing the library of knowledge.

Muslim scientists created a calendar and managed to use astronomy for navigation, which was then used to find the direction of Mecca to face when praying. Scientists also studied the sky through observation.

Muslim mathematics separated the algebra field of mathematics as they excelled and pioneered in it.

The use of Indian numerals made the trading process and exchange easier. it also helped in banking innovations.

Why is it important to learn about Islam as a Non-Muslim?

The best way to learn about Islam is through books written by Muslims. As many people tend to spread misconceptions about Islam. while they all know nothing about the religion itself. To them, Islam is a religion that calls for violence. None of them ever thought of learning the truth of Islam. They only spread the rumors they heard or read in Media.

When it comes to Islam there are many misconceptions. Especially in media, because people tend to spread rumors without knowing if it’s right or wrong. And they only want to spread hate toward Islam. one known rumor about Muslims is that Muslims are terrorists. Which obviously is not true.

Islam calls for worshipping Allah, loving one another, helping the ones in need, and doing good deeds. And that’s what Muslims try their best to do. Terrorism is not related to Islam, it’s an act of people who want to spread fear toward Islam.

If you ask people or learn from the media all you’ll find is people spreading rumors. And they even have no idea what they are talking about. It’s just something they heard from someone else.

There was a survey conducted in 2007 by Pew Research Center to see the American’s opinion of Islam. they found that the negative opinions all came from what they read or heard in the media. Media tend to represent Islam badly as terrorists and murderers.

The research was conducted by communications scholars Saifuddin Ahmed and Jorg Matthes from 2000 to 2015. They found that the media frame Islam in a negative way. It shows the world that Islam is a violent religion. Therefore, if you want to learn the truth about Islam you should learn from trusted books and not the media.

The wrong way to learn about Islam.

The worst way to learn about Islam is through listening, watching, or seeing western media and biased sources. The western media is obsessed with showing Islam, Muslims, and the west in a negative way. In general, the media shows Muslims as terrorists, fanatical, bigoted, extremists, and violent.

This negative image of Islam led to Islamophobia (fear of Islam and Muslims). Can you even imagine that there are people who actually scared of Islam and Muslims? The biggest problem is that they don’t even know anything about Islam. and here comes the underlying problem, the media and its negative framing of Islam and Muslims.

Do you know what bothers me the most? It’s funny how people hate something without even knowing it and making their opinions based on rumors. And the worst part is that they treat Muslims with racism and then say that Muslims are the villains of the story.

Noor (2007) argued that “Muslim identity and the concerns of Muslims are increasingly being defined in terms of an oppositional dialectic that pits Islam and Muslims against the rest of the world” (p. 261).

What is Islamophobia?

Islamophobia is what the media focus on to make people hate Islam.  “Where images of Muslims as murderous fanatics abound in movies, videos, and computer games” (p. 267).

Movies, series, articles, and even social media posts show Islam as a violent religion. Where the truth is that Islam calls for peace, tawhid (worshipping only one God, Allah), and that all people are equal and should be treated with respect. The truth about Islam could be learned from the Quran itself.

And remember, Allah also said in the holy Quran:

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِن جَآءَكُمْ فَاسِقٌۢ بِنَبَإٍۢ فَتَبَيَّنُوٓا۟ أَن تُصِيبُوا۟ قَوْمًۢا بِجَهَـٰلَةٍۢ فَتُصْبِحُوا۟ عَلَىٰ مَا فَعَلْتُمْ نَـٰدِمِينَ ٦

“O believers, if an evildoer brings you any news, verify ˹it˺ so you do not harm people unknowingly, becoming regretful for what you have done.” [surah al hujurat]

Always make sure that what you hear or read is true before you go spreading it.
